Gregory Ombito was crowned the overall winner of the 15th NCBA Golf Series that was held over the weekend at the Kakamega Sports Club.
The handicap-14 player carded 39 points at the par 72 golf club to claim the top honours, thereby booking himself a spot to play at the Series grand finale to be staged in December this year at the Karen Country Club.
Meanwhile, handicap-12 Jimmy Akhonya won the men’s category with 37 points ahead of Sanjiv Walia, handicap 14, who took the runner-up spot in the category also with 37 points but was relegated on count-back.
In the ladies category, handicap-24 Rosemary Angote emerged winner after carding an impressive round of 38 points, ahead of handicap-22 Betty Shikuku who posted 37 points to claim the runner-up spot.
In the nines, handicap-19 Jack Songwa and John Muhanji (handicap 22) were the star players with 20 and 21 points in the first and second nines respectively.
The top five players in the Kakamega leg of the series will now join other qualifiers who will contest for top honours during the season’s finale.
NCBA Group Managing Director, John Gachora said they were encouraged by the positive reception the series has enjoyed throughout, attracting thousands of golfers so far.
“We started this golf series with the aim to reach as many golfers as possible and so far, over 2,000 golfers have participated with a few more rounds to go. By the end of the series, we hope to have reached more golfers in the country and offer them a chance to play,” he said.
“We are very passionate about developing the sport of golf, and therefore by bringing the series closer to the people we hope to inspire the young golfers, by offering them a chance to play as well.”
The event drew participation of over 120 players and it now moves to next weekend’s action at the Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort for the 16th leg of the Tournament.
