Golf: Reed cleared to play, driving to Tour Championship instead of flying

Patrick Reed has been cleared to play in this week’s Tour Championship although he is yet to be cleared to fly.

Reed said on Tuesday he had received a “cautious” OK from doctors to play in the final leg of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoff event. However, coming off a bout with bilateral interstitial pneumonia, the cabin pressure might have proved too much for his lungs.

So Reed packed up a van with his team to make the 12-hour drive from Houston to Atlanta.

“Road trip!” he tweeted.

“Excited to get back out there and give it my best shot.”

Reed missed the start of the playoffs. He was scratched at the Northern Trust – due to an ankle injury – and BMW Championship and dropped to 30th in the FedEx Cup standings.

Reed said he thinks he will be cleared to fly home after the tournament.

Reed is expected to draw a captain’s pick from Steve Stricker to play for Team USA in the Ryder Cup from 24-26th September at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.
