Kenya’s Heristone Wanyonyi made history on Saturday morning when he won the men’s 10,0000m race walk gold medal at the ongoing World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Nairobi.
Wanyonyi, 18, becomes the first Kenyan to win the event at all levels – youth, junior or senior category.
He prevailed ahead of pre-championship favourite Amit Khatri of India with whom they exchanged leads severally before the Kenyan broke away at the bell to win in a personal best time of 42 minutes and 10.84 seconds.
Amit settled for silver in 42:17.94 as Paul McGrath from Spain clocked personal best 42:26.11 to take bronze.
