Wolves run in the Europa League came to an end on Tuesday evening after losing 1-0 to Spanish side Sevilla in Duisburg from a late Lucas Ocampo goal.
The Nuno Espirito Santo side were on course for a clash with Manchester United in the Semi-Finals if they had beaten the La Liga team.
However, Raul Jimenez’s 13th-minute penalty, which could have given the team the lead, was saved, from there on both teams failed to get a way through, until Ocampos header, his seventeenth goal of the season in all competitions, in the 88th minute sealed the tie.
The loss means that Wolves will not be playing the next season of the UEFA Europa League after finishing seventh as Arsenal’s victory in the FA Cup means that the Gunners will take the last spot left in the UEFA Europa League for English teams.
Meanwhile, Sevilla will now take on Manchester United in the semi-finals to be played in Dusseldorf Germany on Sunday. Manchester United defeated Copenhagen after extra-time 1-0.
Shakhtar Donetsk defeated Basel by three goals to nil in the other game played on Tuesday night, and they will now play Inter Milan in their own semi-final after the Italians got the better of Bayer Leverkusen.
Manager of the Wolves side Nuno Espirito Santo said that the team will need new players ahead of the new season.
He stated that his had come a long way, but wanted to go as far as they could. He acknowledged his team’s disappointmeant, but said he was not going to ignore all the effort of 14 months of hard work, and achieving really good things.
He said: “We should prepare well for next season and make good decisions to allow us to continue growing. It is time to reflect and analyze. The team that started the game is the same as the first season. We have made mistakes we cannot repeat. We need players who can make us stronger, no doubt about it.”
Wolves will be hoping to resume preseason soon as the new EPl season begins on September 12.
