Manchester United’s hopes of maintaining their opening day momentum in the Premier League  suffered a setback as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils dropped two points with a 1 – 1 draw at Southampton.

United looked full of attacking menace and threat that saw off Leeds 5-1 last weekend but they failed to match that performance at St Mary’s, handing the Saints their point of the season.

Southampton held their own against United’s bright start and took the lead on the half hour mark when Che Adams’ shot deflected off Fred beyond keeper David de Gea.

United took charge of proceedings soon after Mason Greenwood’s shot went in under Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy 10 minutes after the break and Southampton hade every reason to worry when Solskjaer brought in Jadon Sancho for Anthony Martial, who had looked pale throughout but that scare remained just on paper.

It is actually the hosts who got the best chance of grabbing a winner in the second period but De Gea saved United’s day as the Spaniard crucially denied Adam Armstrong.

Wolves 0 – 1 Tottenham

Dele Alli’s 17-month wait for a Premier League goal finally ended as the Englishman scored Tottenham’s, and the only, goal against Wolves from the penalty spot. Spurs won their second match of the campaign as England captain Harry Kane made his long-awaited return from his extended summer break.

Alli’s converted from 12 yards on the ninth-minute for the only goal of the encounter although Wolves, who perfectly fed off their own fans at Molineux would feel unlucky not to have managed at least a point.

Adama Traore wasted the best of a succession of chances for the hosts when he was sent through by Ruben Neves, only to shoot straight at Hugo Lloris but Tottenham could be right to argue that they had enough opportunities to score more goals and win by a bigger margin.
