France national team manager Didier Deschamps says Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram deserves to be in the France squad.
He is speaking on the big striker’s call-up, who has been in good form in the German Bundesliga.
The 23-year-old has scored two goals in three Champions League appearances with two assists and a goal in seven Bundesliga games that also came with an assist.
Since his move to the Bundesliga side from Guingamp in 2019, Thuram has become a mainstay in Monchengladbach.
This has earned him his maiden call-up tot eh Les Blue. According to the manager, the forward won his national team call-up on merit rather than because of his father’s legendary status.
Marcus is the son of Lilian Thuram, an iconic defender who was part of the squad that won the 1998 France world cup and Euro 2000 trophy.
Marcus is now set for action in Wednesday’s friendly with Finland and the Nations League double-header against Portugal and Sweden.
His high point this season was his brace against Real Madrid in the Champions League. Having been a threat in the attack, Thuram has also been involved in 20 Bundesliga goals. So far, only nine players better his tally over the same period.
Speaking of Thuram’s talents during the announcement of his squad last week, the 1998 World cup winning captain insisted that Thuram is ready to step out of the shadow of his dad. During his playing days, Lilian Thuram made a record of 142 appearances for Les Bleus.
The manager further stated that the Monchenglabach striker is used to things like this, with his father being a legendary figure. He added that the striker is an easy-going and relaxed lad.
Thuram could eventually get the opportunity to make his debut for the team in any of the games. This will be a proud moment for him and his dad.
