Atletico Madrid’s Portuguese forward Joao Felix has become a doubt for the team’s UEFA Champions League knockout tie against Chelsea later in February after testing positive for coronavirus.
Joao Felix will quarantine for ten days after Atletico Madrid confirmed his status on Wednesday morning on the club’s Twitter account.
“Our player Joao Felix has tested positive for Covid-19. He’s isolating at home, in compliance with the health authorities guidelines.” the official statement read.
The Portuguese become the third Atlético player after Mario Hermoso and Yannick Carrasco to test positive for COVID-19.
Joao Felix played for an hour in Atletico’s 4-2 victory at Cadiz last Sunday, but he will now miss Atletico’s La Liga games with Celta Vigo and Granada.
His next game could come against Levante on February 16, if he gets out of quarantine on time.
Atletico will be without Felix for upcoming La Liga fixtures against Celta Vigo and Granada. However, he could be out of quarantine by February 16 when they take in a trip Levante.
However, he won’t be allowed to play the game against Levante if he fails to test negative, an incidence that could also make him miss the tie against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League a few days later.
Atletico Madrid are ten points ahead of their nearest challengers Barcelona and Real Madrid on the La Liga table.
Joao Felix has been a big part after scoring six goals and four assists in the La Liga. He has also scored three goals in six UEFA Champions League matches.
Meanwhile, Atletico’s city rivals Real Madrid also suffered an injury setback on Wednesday after it was confirmed that Belgian forward Eden Hazard will miss football action for one month.
Hazard injured his thigh, and he will miss Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clashes with Atalanta. While Barcelona defeated Granada 5-3 in the Copa Del Rey.
